Multiple sclerosis (MS) is caused by a loss of myelin due to inflammation. This loss of myelin can occur in the brain or spinal cord. The source of inflammation and myelin loss is though to be a virus or genetic defect – with environmental factors also playing a role.
Epidemiology
MS is typically diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40 and affects women more than men. It has a prevalence in Canada between 55 to 240 per 100,000 (MS Society of Canada).
What can be done?
Currently there is no cure for MS. Therapies administered by doctors can try to return the function after an attack and prevent new attacks.
